THE GIRL WHO STOPPED SWIMMING by Joshilyn Jackson
336 Pages
Publisher: Grand Central Publishing
Publication Date: 2009-05-26

Read and except.

About the Book:

Lauren Gray Hawthorne needs to make things pretty, whether she’s helping her mother keep family skeletons in the closet or sewing her acclaimed art quilts. Her estranged sister, Thalia, is her opposite, an impoverished actress who prides herself on exposing the lurid truths lurking behind middle class niceties.

While Laurel’s life seems neatly on track– a passionate marriage, a treasured daughter, a lovely suburban home– everything she holds dear is threatened the night she is visited by the ghost of her 13-year-old neighbor Molly. The ghost leads Laurel to the real Molly, floating lifelessly in the Hawthorne’s backyard pool. Molly’s death is an unseemly mystery that no one in her whitewashed neighborhood is up to solving. Laurel enlists Thalia’s help, even though she knows it comes with a high price tag.

Together, they set out on a life-altering journey that triggers startling revelations about their family’s haunted past, the true state of Laurel’s marriage, and the girl who stopped swimming.

Have you ever considered writing Christian Fiction novels, as you mentioned you are involved in your methodist church?

Riddle:

A hiker comes to a fork in the road and doesn’t know which way to go to reach his destination. There are two men at the fork, one of whom always tells the truth while the other always lies. The hiker doesn’t know which is which, though. He may ask one of the men only one question to find his way. Which man does he ask, and what is the question?

I don’t know the answer to your riddle – too tough! But here’s one of mine:

If you have me, you want to share me. If you share me, you haven’t got me. What am I?

Since you use to act do you use that background when writing? For example, do you act out the book persay in your head or do you just let the words flow onto the pages

I’m often seen around a lot, referred to many ways,
See me black and you may find misfortune haunts your days.
Tell a thing, that should have been kept quiet, to all around,
Then look inside the sack, there I’m no longer to be found.
Nosiness, prying, snooping, leaves me fearing, full of dread,
For all these things are likely to see me soon lying dead.
These clues combined should start to give a picture, an idea,
Of who or what I am, so can you tell me? Is it clear?

Question for the author: Which profession (acting, teaching, writing) did you find you were most passionate about?

Riddle: Was the puddle of water a 3 ft block of ice he stood on to hang himself?
