I have the paperback copy in my shelf, but I listened to this book in my iPod. The reader, Micheal Beck, is a fun reader to listen to. After over 5 dozens of books in audio, I realized that a reader can make or break a book for me. For example, I can’t even sit long enough to read halfway through Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. I tried, it’s just not doing it for me. I listened to audio version on a lark, and I find that I cannot get enough of listening to Jim Dale reading about Harry Potter.

Micheal Beck reads The Appeal like a dream. It’s about big chemical company and their toxic waste. It’s about killing the town by infecting the water source so bad even plants die from it. I like the local color of the book. It’s set in a small town in Mississippi (MS). I get to know more about MS judicial system. I like hearing about a billionaire’s trophy wife. John Grisham’s description is hilarious at times. I don’t know any trophy wife intimately, so I don’t know if this is true. I wonder about that. Still I enjoy this book so much.

Have you read this? It came out last year. If you haven’t, I have one used copy of this book available for giveaway.

For a chance to read this book, I’m curious. What do you imagine a trophy wife to be?

Skipping Christmas
by John Grisham
Mass Market Paperback
Published in 2004
ISBN-10: 0-440-24257-6

This was made into a movie. I have not seen it. I finally listened to the story in audio, so I don’t have to read this book. I have someone ‘read’ it for me.

If you’ve missed this Grisham book, then here’s your chance to read his non-lawyer book. A different pace, but still a Grisham. Fun read, though it gets uncomfortable with all those nosy neighbors.

From amazon:

Book Description
Luther and Nora Krank are fed up with the chaos of Christmas. The endless shopping lists, the frenzied dashes through the mall, the hassle of decorating the tree… where has all the joy gone? This year, celebrating seems like too much effort. With their only child off in Peru, they decide that just this once, they’ll skip the holidays. They spend their Christmas budget on a Caribbean cruise set to sail on December 25, and happily settle in for a restful holiday season free of rooftop snowmen and festive parties.

But the Kranks soon learn that their vacation from Christmas isn’t much of a vacation at all, and that skipping the holidays has consequences they didn’t bargain for…

A modern Christmas classic, Skipping Christmas is a charming and hilarious look at the mayhem and madness that have become ingrained in our holiday tradition.
