Her Fearful Symmetry: A Novel (Unabridged Edition)
by Audrey Niffenegger, Bianca Amato (Reader)
Length: 13 hrs and 48 min
Audio CD, Published 2009 by Simon & Schuster Audio, Unabridged Edition
ISBN-10: 0743599306, ISBN-13: 9780743599306

I pre-ordered this audio book from audible.com. However, I was three hours into it when I decided I cannot stand it. Then, I’m at a loss for what to listen on my iPod because my iTunes doesn’t take in audio CD. Horrible of iTunes, I know. But they cannot or will not fix it. So, I went back to audible books I have.

Now, I’m on hour 10 and I’m enjoying the story very much. The narrator, when she does Julia’s voice, sounds like Wynona Ryder. It was all confusing at first, and frankly, after Time Traveller’s Wife, it came out really slow and a lot boring.

But, if you hang in there, you’ll find yourself liking the story.  It’s actually clever. But don’t go into it with a set of expectations…that will only hinder your enjoyment of the book. It picks up, for me, about halfway through. Have you read this book? Have you listened to it? What did you think of it?

Description from Amazon.com

Audrey Niffenegger’s spectacularly compelling second novel opens with a letter that alters the fate of every character. Julia and Valentina Poole are semi-normal American twenty-year-olds with seemingly little interest in college or finding jobs. Their attachment to one another is intense. One morning the mailman delivers a thick envelope to their house in the suburbs of Chicago. From a London solicitor, the letter informs Valentina and Julia that their English aunt Elspeth Noblin, whom they never knew, has died of cancer, and left them her London apartment. There are two conditions to this inheritance: that they live in it for a year before they sell it; and that their parents may not enter it. Julia and Valentina are twins. So were the estranged Elspeth and Edie, their mother.
The girls move to Elspeth’s flat, which borders the vast and ornate Highgate Cemetery. Julia and Valentina come to know the residents of their building. There is Martin, a brilliant and charming crossword puzzle setter suffering from crippling obsessive compulsive disorder; Marjike, Martin’s devoted but trapped wife; and Robert, Elspeth’s elusive lover, a scholar of the cemetery. As the girls become embroiled in the fraying lives of their aunt’s neighbors, they also discover that much is still alive in Highgate, including — perhaps — their aunt.

Author of one of the most beloved first novels in recent years, Niffenegger returns with an unnerving, unforgettable and enchanting ghost story, a novel about love and identity, secrets and sisterhood, and the tenacity of life — even after death.

I was suddenly so busy, it’s all I could do to keep up with mundane things like laundry and cooking/baking enough stuff so I don’t have to every day. I would like to thank McDonalds, Hooters, Boston Market Chicken, Wendy’s, Paradise Cafe and Dickies BBQ for picking up the slack. I couldn’t even say exactly what I’m busy about. It started out with a very drippy nose, slight vertigo, and a general feeling of “Oh-no-I-think-I’m-getting sick”…and before I know it, I’m behind a lot of things.

Then there was school supplies shopping. The boys don’t care what I picked, so it was easy to shop for them. But my little girl who’s not so little anymore insist on going school supplies shopping with her friend. She wants to pick every little thing on the list. It was fun to shop with her, but it was so much faster to shop for the boys.

My kids tested for the next level of their mixed martial arts and now they’re brown belts and blue belts. It’s just a little scary to know that when we horseplay, I get kicks and punches that’s very painful. They’re never intentional, but they get these memory reflexes.

The Time Traveler’s Wife: Unabridged Edition [AUDIOBOOK]
by Audrey Niffenegger (Author)
Read by: William Hope, and Laurel Lefkow

I think this book is one of the greatest love story of all time. Henry and Clare Detamble love’s story might even be more poignant, interesting and grand than Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Paulinna Simons’ Tatiana and Alexander or even Jane Austen’s Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth. Do you have other couple in mind?

I can’t wait for the big screen version of the book. It’s coming out in August this year or February neat year. I am not quite sure which.  It’s got Eric Bana in it. I like him as an actor. I really hope it’s got a lot of the book in it. I hope it won’t turn out like P.S. I Love You. They changed it around so much, there was hardly anything of the book left in it. I watched it though because Gerard Butler is hot!

I read the book and listened to the audio book version. You can read more about other people’s take on this book hereHave you read THE TIME TRAVELER’S WIFE? What did you think of it? If haven’t read the book, let me know. I’d draw a name from those who haven’t and send you a copy.

On another note, Audrey Niffenegger has another book. Her second novel, Her Fearful Symmetry received a $5 million advance. It will be published by Scribner in October.

Her second novel is about

a supernatural story about twins who inherit an apartment near a London cemetery and become embroiled in the lives of the building’s other residents and the ghost of their aunt, who left them the flat.
