Grand Avenue
by Joy Fielding
Published in 2002
It has been a long time since I had grabbed a book and have it hold my attention. That does not mean I do not enjoy the books I have been reading, because I do. However, I have not been captivated for a book. I even wish for longer wait at Sam’s Tire place, or getting stuck in traffic. I show up at the height of ‘rush hour’ at the school so I can stay and wait and read my book.
I cannot even wait for an audio because I wanted to read it now. This book is by Joy Fielding. My mother read her. She has this large print edition lying around in my house, so I picked it up on a lark just to see what sort of book she’s been reading. Right on the first page, I can feel that excitement of a good book. Joy Fielding never disappoint. It is a grand roller coaster ride of a book. I wonder if she writes like this all the time.
There is so much tension, and excitement. It’s almost hard to bear! This story is about 4 women who happens to live in the same street. They have developed a friendship. They have different personality. Vicki is a lawyer, a go-getter, and fearless. She’s views marital cheating in a don’t ask, don’t lie attitude. Barbara is a former beauty Queen, and she lives her life by that rule. She’s always made up, and she’s always poise. However, her husband is a skirt chaser. Susan is married to a wonderful doctor. She pursued a career in publication and landed a job which almost put her marriage at risk. Then there’s Chris. She’s meek, and her husband tells her what to do all the time.
All these in one clever book and you have hours of entertainment. I wanted so much for someone else to read this book and share the excitement. So, even though I can’t offer my mother’s large print copy, I will buy a good copy for the winner of this post.

Sounds like a lovely read! Hope to win this! Thanks
This book really sounds interesting. I love books about groups of different women and how they interact and come together. I tend to really like “club” books - scrapbooking clubs, knitting clubs, book clubs, etc. Even though I’m not a member of any clubs, and I don’t scrapbook or knit, I still like reading about how a bunch of women come together to share something they have in common! I love being grabbed by a book - it shows a sign of a good author. I haven’t read any Joy Fielding, but I’d love the chance to!

I read several genres of books and the reasons differ why I read them. When I need some kind of push/person help, I will read a self-help/spirituality book. If I want to learn about a person/culture/real life situations, then I devour nonfiction books! If I am in a mood where I don’t want think too much or maul over a book, I enjoy a light-hearted chick-lit book. Historical, romance, suspense, etc. are also enjoyable reads, but I usually have to think more and they will take me longer to read. I would appreciate being entered in your book drawing. Many thanks, Cindi
I read because I love words. I love hearing them, and seeing them curl on the page. I read because I love stories, and every new book is a new story just waiting to be discovered. I read because I love to think, and there are so many educational, thought-provoking books around. I read for fun, because I like humorous books and chick-lit. I read because I love characters, discovering about their quirks and peculiarities, and learning to love them and feel them alive. I read because I like feeling connected to all the other people who have read the same book, or are going to read it in their future. I read because it makes me feel alive.

I read, simply put, because it makes me happy. Books are an integral part of my life, and have been since I was just a tiny little kid. I learned to read even before starting school, and ever since I’ve never been far from a book. I love how you can curl up with a book and be transported from your own world (no matter how great it is) to another incredible time and place. When an author writes from his/her soul and truly believes in his/her story and characters it all becomes real. Real to them and real to the reader. I love being able to experience things, through books, that I’d never have the opportunity to experience in real life. I love that I can take a book with me anywhere I go, and I instantly have entertainment awaiting me at my fingertips. I love that I can curl up and relax with a book, laugh with a book, cry with a book, and just generally find fulfillment in books.
Thanks!

I read because I like to. Reading transports me away from the everyday trials and tribulations of life.
Reading is also a way of learning about foreign countries and their many customs.
I read most genres—chick lit, romantic suspense, mystery and my favorite, paranormal.
Reading is my way of relaxing and refilling my energy well.
I read because it takes me away to exotic locations and cultures or to a time past when women wore hoop skirts and men were gallant knaves. It can also take me into a world of fantasy like âThe Mists of Avalonâ by Marion Zimmer Bradley. Reading magically transports me to a fascinating era or location where my imagination takes fire. Waiting in line right now are books that take place in India (âThe Far Pavilionsâ by M.M. Kaye), England during the time of Henry VIII (âThe Boleyn Inheritanceâ by Philippa Gregory â I love her books!), Nantucket (âBarefootâ by Elin Hilderbrand), and one that will take me from Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia to post WWI in New York City (âFall on Your Kneesâ by Ann-Marie MacDonald). Iâve been saving them up for when I have my back surgery and Iâll be housebound for two or three months. Right now Iâm reading âCold Mountainâ by Charles Frazier. Nothing could be better than being immersed in a good story!

Hi! I found you thru My Friend Amy and I would like to enter your contest.
I read because I am passionate about reading and learning. Books are an escape from the hum-drum world of reality. I typically enjoy escapism fiction, but I also read non-fiction, biographies, gardening books and self-help books. Going to the Public Library is one of my favorite weekly trips - I also write book reviews for the library.
You have a wonderful site here! I’ve blogrolled you, so I’ll be checking back in!

I read because I have always loved reading. I don’t remember not being able to read, it’s just always been a part of my life. When I was young and lived in the country there were no kids within walking distance, and so I read for entertainment in the summertime. In college I read because I had to. It was the only time in my life that I’ve taken a break from recreational reading. As a nursing mother I always had a book by my side, even at 3am feedings. I read to entertain when I’m bored, to learn when I’m curious, and to occupy my mind when I’m in pain or sick.

I read because I don’t know what I’d do with myself if I didn’t! I read for knowledge, for entertainment, and to learn about myself and about the world. I read to escape. I read because I don’t need to escape! I read for the joy of it, and for the love of books.
I don’t know if this is fifty words yet — but I hope that it’ll do!

Never read Joy Fielding but have heard great things. Thanks for a chance to get one.
I read because it keeps me sane. I have always appreciated that reading is a great way to escape the trials and tribulations that life can throw your way. Now that I have three kids it is even more important to me so I can’t understand it when someone says they don’t have time to read a book anymore. I use the various genres for different levels of escape. If nothing is going right and total escape is needed then I read fantasy. If the thought of a romantic gettaway with my husband is now a distant dream for someday when the kids decide to spread their wings then a little romance may do the trick. You see where this is going so I won’t ramble.
I read because my mind needs the exercise and I love it when pictures start forming in my head and I actually see the story unfold. I know my imagination goes into overdrive whenever I read books - and that’s good. Books are a cheaper way to travel the world and learn about life in other places.
I enjoy books about girl bonding in various forms perhaps because I don’t always get to hang out with girlfriends.

There are so many reasons I read. I read books because I can’t not read. Does that make sense? That sounds like an interesting book. I read somewhere that when a tale has four characters, it’s almost guaranteed that they’ll each be one of the four main personality types. Would you say that’s true in this book?
