FREE 31: The Used World by Haven Kimmel

The Used World: A Novel
by Haven Kimmel
Advance Reader's Edition

I read this book for the summer reading review for Elle Magazine. It's an interesting book, not the usual ones I read. I enjoy it, a lot. This is only in good condition, the front cover is curled. I'm careful with my books, but when one of my children 'borrow it' it inevitably acquire wrinkles. I'm passing it on to you, my loyal participants. I'll have more posted in a few days.

From Publishers Weekly
Kimmel (Something Rising (Light and Swift); A Girl Named Zippy) returns to rural Indiana in her expansive third novel. Hazel Hunnicut is the proprietor of Hazel Hunnicut's Used World Emporium, the station at the end of the line for myriad antiques and junk in Jonah, Ind. With her passel of cats and distaste for convention, Hazel is eccentric but grudgingly beloved by her two employees: Claudia, a tall and lonely woman ostracized for her androgynous appearance, and Rebekah, who is still recovering from an oppressive Pentecostal upbringing. With a nudge from Hazel and the appearance of an abandoned infant (whose junkie mother, a friend of Hazel's junkie sister, is dead), the two women form a relationship, providing momentum as an unlikely family takes shape and hidden connections between the characters are revealed.
The story has many satisfying layers, but melding them requires Kimmel to jump around in time, sometimes to confusing results (among the pasts visited are Rebekah's childhood; Hazel's upbringing and the backstory on her relationship with the locals; and dreamlike visions of a long-ago romance between a black groundskeeper and a white judge's daughter). It's an intriguing puzzle box of a novel with a few edges left unsanded. (Sept.)

FREE 30: Murphy's Law by Lori Foster

Murphy's Law
by Lori Foster
Paperback
Published in 2006
ISBN-10:
082177803X

Carrie (DumSpiroSpero) again! This also is a book I haven't read for a while but liked a lot. It was pretty sexy from what I remember. I've got some other books to add but there's a pretty big list so far so I'll hold onto them for the future!

Reader review from Amazon.com:

Quinton Murphy knows what he likes and what he likes is Ashley Miles, May's best friend. But Ashley is willful, stubborn and has a plan for her life. She works hard and he knows he doesn't factor into her future. Good thing he's as stubborn as she is because he wants her in his life and he is going to make her realize that she can have her future and he can be a part of it. But he's not counting on how protective she is going to be of her heart. He knows she is hiding something from him and he will do what he must to find out what it is...he doesn't scare easily and Ashley is worth it.

Ms. Foster has done it again! This is a wonderfully sexy read that long time fans and new fans alike will love. We met Quinton and Ashley in "Jude's Law" and I was thrilled to find out she was going to give these two special characters their own story. The pages sizzle with their sexy chemistry and when combined with the fast-paced storyline, readers will be well entertained. I truly believe Ms. Foster is incapable of penning a dull story!

FREE 29: An Independent Woman by Candace Camp

An Independent Womanby Candace Camp
Mass Market Paperback
Published in 2006
ISBN-10:
0373770979

Hi everybody! This is Carrie (DumSpiroSpero) posting. I've been inspired to give away some of my books as well, so I asked for the chance to use this blog as my venue since my blog has a small readership while this one's becoming established. I'm attempting to keep the same format that you're all used to but I don't really know what I'm doing, so bear with me! :)

It's been a while since I read this book, but I enjoyed it very much at the time.

A reader review from Amazon.com:
A Candace Camp historical romance is always a delight. An Independent Woman is one of her best. Julianna Holcott & Nicholas Barre are childhood friends who faced orphanhood together. Fifteen years later, Nicholas is now Lord Barre. He returns to England to claim his inheritance and find Julianna, who is now a paid companion. Nicholas proposes marriage to his dear friend, thinking he can maintain a marriage of convenience. Candace Camp captivates us throughout the pages as the desire builds between Julianna and Nicholas. They return to his estate to be married, an estate and inheritance his cousin Crandall and Aunt Lilith have been maintaining for him throughout the years of his absence. The story takes a turn with a murder on Julianna & Nicholas's wedding night, with a Clue-like cast of characters as the possible culprit. A touching Cinderella story with a bit of mystery and suspense. An enjoyable read!

I found this extra copy of Stephanie Plum series. I would love to post them in order, but since I cannot, I'm posting them as I find them in my shelves.
I can't say enough good things about this series. You can read this out of orde. Each book is a stand-alone story. But, stay tune, I'm pretty sure I have more Stephanie Plum series in one of my yet-to-be-unpacked boxes.

What Amazon said:
"Uncle Fred was someone I saw at weddings and funerals and once in a while at Giovichinni's Meat Market, ordering a quarter pound of olive loaf. Eddie Such, the butcher, would have the olive loaf on the scale and Uncle Fred would say, 'You've got the olive loaf on a piece of waxed paper. How much does that piece of waxed paper weigh? You're not gonna charge me for that waxed paper, are you? I want some money off for the waxed paper.'"
The speaker is Stephanie Plum, the glamorous if slightly ditzy bounty hunter from Trenton, New Jersey, and one of the most original creations in recent mystery fiction.

FREE 26: Charlie All Night by Jennifer Crusie

Charlie All Night (Harlequin Temptation, No 570)
by Jennifer Crusie
Paperback
Published in 1995

Here's another Crusie for you from Harlequin Temptation. This is the Harlequin line that I used to read in my early teens. It's like contraband. I imagine it's as exciting as smoking weed. I never tried weed, but just try reading a book with a couple hugging on the cover and the guy is half naked...during church services.

See, I told you it's like contraband. Imagine how it feels when I was caught, right in the middle of discussing the Revelations, with a totally different revelation of my own. BTW, it wasn't a Crusie book, but it was Harlequin Temptation, and I was only 12. Oh, the shame of it all! It never stopped me from reading, only I had to be craftier than the last time.

Book Description
Dumped by her boyfriend and demoted from WBBB's prime-time spot, radio producer Allie McGuffey has nowhere to go but up. She plans to make her comeback by turning temporary DJ Charlie Tenniel into a household name. And if he's willing to help her cure her breakup blues with a rebound fling, that's an added bonus.
Charlie just wants to kick back, play good tunes and eat Chinese food. He's not interested in becoming famous. But he is interested in Allie. And after all, what harm in a little chemistry between friends?

But suddenly their one-night stand has become a four-week addiction. Night after night on the airwaves, his voice seduces her. . .and all the other women in town. He's a hit. It looks as if Charlie's solved all Allie's problems. . .except one. What is she going to do when he leaves?

Anyone But You (Harlequin Love and Laughter, No 4)
by Jennifer Crusie
Paperback
Published in 1996

I enjoyed this book so much, I went and bought all of Jennifer Crusie's book. She will make you laugh til you get stitches. She's that good. I kept a copy of her books for re-read, but noticed that I have two of some of her books. If you haven't tried Crusie, what are you waiting for?

Product Description
For Nina Askew, turning forty means freedom--from the ex-husband, freedom from their stuffy suburban home, freedom to focus on what she wants for a change. And what she wants is something her ex always vetoed--a puppy. A bouncy, adorable puppy.

Instead she gets…Fred.

Overweight, middle-aged, a bit smelly and obviously depressed, Fred is light-years from perky. But he does manage to put Nina in the path of Alex Moore, her gorgeous, younger-by-a-decade neighbor.

Alex seems perfect--he's a sexy, seemingly sane, surprisingly single E.R. doctor--but the age gap convinces Nina that anyone but Alex would be better relationship material. But with every silver-haired stiff she dates, the more she suspects it's the young, dog-loving doc she wants to sit and stay!

If you've missed this Grisham book, then here's your chance to read his non-lawyer book. A different pace, but still a Grisham. Fun read, though it gets uncomfortable with all those nosy neighbors.

From amazon:
Book Description
Luther and Nora Krank are fed up with the chaos of Christmas. The endless shopping lists, the frenzied dashes through the mall, the hassle of decorating the tree... where has all the joy gone? This year, celebrating seems like too much effort. With their only child off in Peru, they decide that just this once, they'll skip the holidays. They spend their Christmas budget on a Caribbean cruise set to sail on December 25, and happily settle in for a restful holiday season free of rooftop snowmen and festive parties.

But the Kranks soon learn that their vacation from Christmas isn't much of a vacation at all, and that skipping the holidays has consequences they didn't bargain for...

A modern Christmas classic, Skipping Christmas is a charming and hilarious look at the mayhem and madness that have become ingrained in our holiday tradition.

A reader's review:
AWESOME
This book isn't just great, it's awesome. I don't write reviews very often, only on books that really touch me, and man this one did. I inhaled it. I should say too, that I haven't read the first books of the series, I was hungry for a Texas love story and this fit the bill. Ali was so adorable, she hooked me from the first page, and Garrett was cool, in a nerdy kind of way and that was very endearing.
Loved it. Off to order the rest in the series.
Thanks, Peggy Moreland for an enjoyable afternoon.

Cold Sassy Tree
by Olive Ann Burns
Paperback

List Price: $5.95
Published in 1986
ISBN-10: 0-440-51442-8

I read this book and loved it! It's been around awhile, but I feel like it's one of the best novel ever written. Right there alongside Barbara Kingsolver's The Poisonwood Bible, Betty Smith's A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, and the likes.

Synopsis:
The one thing you can depend on in Cold Sassy, Georgia, is that word gets around - fast. When Grandpa E. Rucker Blakeslee announces one July morning in 1906 that he's aiming to marry the young and freckledy milliner, Miss Love Simpson - a bare three weeks after Granny Blakeslee has gone to her reward - the news is served up all over town with that afternoon's dinner. And young Will Tweedy suddenly finds himself eyewitness to a major scandal. Boggled by the sheer audacity of it all, and not a little jealous of his grandpa's new wife, Will nevertheless approves of this May-December match and follows its progress with just a smidgen of youthful prurience. As the newlyweds' chaperone, conspirator, and confidant, Will is privy to his one-armed, renegade grandfather's second adolescence; meanwhile, he does some growing up of his own. He gets run over by a train and lives to tell about it; he kisses his first girl, and survives that too. Olive Ann Burns has given us a timeless, funny, resplendent novel - about a romance that rocks an entire town, about a boy's passage through the momentous but elusive year when childhood melts into adolescence, and about just how people lived and died in a small Southern town at the turn of the century. Inhabited by characters who are wise and loony, unimpeachably pious and deliciously irreverent, Cold Sassy, Georgia, is the perfect setting for the debut of a storyteller of rare brio, exuberance, and style.

I read Joan Johnston forever. When I was 12, I was following her Silhouette Desire series. What fantastic stories they were. I'll put them up here soon. I have yet to unpack that box since we moved last year.

This is historical romance, but as usual, a very good story.

What amazon said:
The Bodyguard is the latest historical in Joan Johnston's Captive Hearts series. Set in Regency-era Scotland, Katherine MacKinnon's father names her the head of the MacKinnon clan on his deathbed and extracts a secret promise: Katherine must trick the duke of Blackthorne into marrying her in order to bear a child that would rightfully own the lands that were taken from the MacKinnons by the Blackthorne family.
Katherine's clansmen, however, will not accept a woman as their laird, and all are determined to marry her off to one of their own. Intent on fulfilling her promise to her father, Katherine desperately searches for a bodyguard and ultimately finds Alex. Afflicted with amnesia since being shipwrecked, Alex finds Katherine interesting and happily agrees to protect her.

What Alex doesn't know is that he is the duke of Blackthorne, and that the shipwreck was an attempt on his life. Katherine discovers this truth before Alex does, and she must decide whether to tell him or not, knowing that this truth kill their blossoming love.

Twelve Sharp (Stephanie Plum, No. 12)
by Janet Evanovich
Mass Market Paperback

Condition: Good, front cover curls up.

I find myself with an extra copy of Stephanie Plum series. This is book #12, but each book of the series is a stand alone read also. There's going to be 14 books in this series at the end of the year.

If you've never heard of Stephanie Plum, here's your chance.

From Publisher's Weekly:
The mixture of slapstick and gunplay that has put Evanovich's series about a sassy, less than competent New Jersey bounty hunter at the top of bestseller lists once again works its magic in Stephanie Plum's latest caper (after 2005's Eleven on Top). Stephanie, who freely admits her failings as a hunter of fugitives, faces a growing work backlog that threatens the continued existence of her job. Her clumsy efforts to clear some cases, along with the help of her outrageous colleague, Lula, result only in their adding another sad sack to the office payroll—a forlorn shoe salesman who's talked off a ledge by Stephanie's offer of a position as file clerk. Stephanie's ambivalence toward the two men in her life becomes harder to maintain when one of them, the mysterious Ranger, is accused of kidnapping his own daughter. Countless over-the-top scenes, including one at a funeral parlor, will delight longtime fans.

I love the Harlequin Blaze line. It's spicy and fun. I need to unpack my boxfull of these books and put them up. If you like Blaze, or if you're just itching to try one, here's you chance.

What readers say about this book:

Always delivers a great book!
The author never fails to develop interesting side characters as well as believable, real main characters in her books. Loved the premise for this one, and the theme, of someone breaking away from her normal life and daring to experience something new. But this isn't about one of your heiresses or socialites realizing themselves, but a real person, like your best friend or coworker. Enjoyed where most of the action takes place too--on a yacht for hire! And of course the chemistry is hot! Thanks for a great read! Her stories never disappoint.

About Free #12

  1. Free 12: The Secretary's Secret by Michelle Celmer

I had thought I have two copies of this book. Turned out that I was just really sleepy when I posted this one, again.

I am offering a subsitute.

Instead of the title above, this will be the book that will be mailed:
Executive Seduction (Silhouette Desire)
by Kristi Gold
Mass Market Paperback
Condition: Used, good.

Book snippet:
T.V. Chef Corri Harris wasn't surprised to receive the "Dear Corri" letter from her fiancé Kevin O'Brien, but she was furious with his timing (ten minutes before live air) and his method. Corri knew her job was doomed, when her temper got the better of her near the end of the show, and she demonstrated her skill with a knife and a cucumber and announced to her audience that she'd been dumped. When station owner, Aidan O'Brien reads the letter he fully understands Corri's anger but he isn't sorry about the breakup. Though he'd been in a relationship at the time, he's always regretted introducing Corri to his brother, Kevin, and now that they are no longer a couple and he is free, it means he has a shot with Corri. Only Corri doesn't yet know the big networks are wooing her, and that's why Aidan keeps things between them no-strings-attached. It seems that it's always bad timing keeping them apart.

WINNER 8: The Accidental Werewolf by Dakota Cassidy

I know you're awaiting for the drawing of this book with baited breath. I had my drawing production all planned out and it's going to be videotaped....

You know what they say about plans of mice and men. My two youngest children came down with high fever and runny nose and coughing. They got so clingy, I didn't have enough hands or energy to do anything else but cuddle and bribe them to take their medicines.

Still, we have a winner! I wrote every contender's name in a paper of similar size. Rolled them up, put them in an empty fish bowl...shake them all around and have one of my children picked up the lucky winner.

Drum rolls please....

Congratulations to Jen in WA. You won Dakota Cassidy's signed copy of The Accidental Werewolf. Please e-mail me your name and address. If I could, I would have entered my name too. I would love to get a signed copy of this book. There's just something about signed book.

What amazon said:
What does a girl do when she catches her fiance in her bed with a hooker? Start over this time with her eyes wide open. Lisa Simpkins is newly single. Catching your fiance being sodomized by a hooker can do that to a relationship. Unfortunately for Lisa, this mess put a huge kink in her carefully orchestrated life plan. Good thing her best friend, Gina, can talk Lisa into anything, including a makeover complete with sex toys and a collection of highly erotic DVDs. Gina's determined to bring out Lisa's inner wild woman. Even if that wild woman comes along kicking and screaming. Lisa's not sure about Gina's plan, but the man is gorgeous, smart and funny.

Template Again

I have a short attention span when it comes to templates. It's probably a good thing I can't program a template code worth anything or I might never quit from constantly tweaking and changing my blog looks. Does it look a little lopsided to you? Hmmm. I can't quite decide.

But then again, I really gotta sleep because I get to do carpool in the morning.

What do you think of this template?

Drawing for this book will be held later on today. Don't forget that on the 21st, there will be drawing for Dakota Cassidy's signed copy of The ACCIDENTAL WEREWOLF. I am so tempted to leave a comment myself...but alas, no can do.

What readers said:

Attractive, funny couple with great sexual chemistry
Nick Bateman and Zoë Simmons are great together as a romantic couple. Both are attractive, funny with great sexual chemistry between the two. Nick is Zoë Simmons' boss and she's his secretary. The employer/employee relationship between the two is friendly and neither wanted to ruin the great camaraderie between them.

This books starts out with a bang, with Zoë trying to sneak out of the hotel room that she just shared with her boss, Nick. The evening before, Nick had just bailed out of marrying someone else (Believe me the woman deserved it) and ended up in the hotel room being comforted by his ever so efficient secretary, Zoë. He's worried about ruining his friendly relationship with his secretary, but remembers that she did not want any commitment. So why worry.... Yeah Right.

What readers say about this book:

An entertaining and touching read
"Sleeping Beauty" is a charming novel by Judy Baer about a young woman, Suze Charles, who has had issues with sleepwalking her entire life. Her college escapades are legendary! Her mother is in denial that Suze still sleepwalks now that she's grown up. Her sister is adopting a baby from South America, and must leave her "vivacious" 4 year-old twin sons with Suze for a couple of months! Suze is considering turning down a great job that will require much travel because of her "problem". And now she's met a handsome doctor who just happens to specialize in sleep disorders! What a tangled web Suze's life is. This novel is never dull - that's for sure!

FREE 6: Ain't She Sweet by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

Ain't She Sweet? (Paperback)
by Susan Elizabeth Phillips
Drawing: March 19, 2008

This is a treat. It's one of my favorites from this author. Actually, there isn't much that is not a favorite by this author. I'm giving away paperback copy of this book. It's in good condition, and the story is fabulous. I cried and I laughed my head off on this book. If you haven't tried SEP, then it's about time.

From Publishers Weekly
A small town's prodigal daughter returns to face her past in bestseller Phillips's latest cheeky, diverting fairy tale. Sugar Beth Carey, "the wild child of Parrish, Mississippi," was once the queen of all she surveyed, but after 15 years and three marriages, she's a broken (and broke) husk of her former self. Who's loving the schadenfreude? The Seawillows, for starters-the gaggle of Southern belles Sugar dumped years ago, plus Winnie Davis, the half-sister she treated like dirt. And there's more: not only did Sugar stomp on gorgeous Ryan Galantine's heart (luckily, Winnie caught him on the rebound), she also got Colin Byrne, the sexy British high school teacher, fired for ostensibly coming on to her...

Edit March 21: comments close. Drawing a little delayed. Watch out for more Susan Elizabeth Phillips books soon.

FREE 5: The Alpine Christmas by Mary Daheim

Alpine Christmas (Emma Lord Mysteries)
by Mary Daheim
Mass Market Paperback, 272 Pages, Published in 1993
ISBN-10: 0-345-38270-6

I like mystery. The author which brought me to mystery is John D. MacDonald. I used to find it very weird indeed to read a book not written in 3rd person singular. I feel like I'm missing too much. Then Travis McGee came into my life, and I got sucked in. Along came JA Jance's JP Beaumont, Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone, Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum. I am so glad I ventured out of my romantic fiction world.

Book Description:
An Emma Lord Mystery.
Christmas in the town of Alpine means fresh snow, carolers, even a sleigh. But then the discovery of a woman's leg in the lake, along with that of another young woman's nude, half-frozen body, deflates everyone's high spirits. But as Emma Lord, editor and publisher of The Alpine Advocate, follows up on the story, the bits and pieces of the young women who keep turning up start adding up to a murder scheme so sinister it may well land Emma on her own obituary page . . .

I am giving away this book by Silhouette Desire line. It's my favorite line of romance when I was a teenager. I still buy them and hoard them. Noticed that I said hoard, because last year, I actually end up with over 200 of it. I just moved to a new house 6 months ago, and most of the books are in storage. Check out the author site above...she writes good stories.

From the author's site:
HOSTILE TAKEOVER

Flatly refused a promotion by her tycoon father, heiress Tempest Lambert offered her services to his worst enemy. But was it the job she wanted, or just her new boss, the devastatingly handsome Gavin Renard?

He'd made millions as a corporate raider, but taking over the Lambert's retail conglomerate wasn't about business-Gavin wanted revenge. Using Tempest as a pawn in his takeover game was a possibility. Making her his mistress-that was an offer he couldn't refuse.

THE MISTRESSES: Wealthy men want them...and their price is love!
