Blood of the Wicked by Leighton Gage: Giveaway
Blood of the Wicked
by Leighton Gage
Sarah Reidy of Soho Press sent me a copy of this book. It’s part of this Soho Crime selection. It’s one of the greatest book I have read. It reminds me of the time I started reading Hostage by Robert Crais. Remember the movie with Bruce Willis? Well, this is another book I’d love to see in a movie.
Leighton Gage is very compelling. I love the setting: Brazil. I know nothing of Brazil, and this book brings me there. To the bad parts, the good parts and the intriguing parts. Did you know that you have to be a lawyer to progress in rank in the police department? I thought that’s very interesting.
This book is 324 pages long, but when you get to the end, it feels like you’ve just reach the end of a wonderful epical journey. Leighton Gage manage to pack so much into this book, it’s one great satisfying read.
Synopsis from Soho Press site:
In the remote Brazilian town of Cascatas do Pontal, where landless peasants are confronting the owners of vast estates, the the bishop arrives by helicopter to consecrate a new church and is assassinated.
Mario Silva, Chief Inspector for Criminal Matters of the Federal Police of Brazil, is dispatched to the interior to find the killer. The Pope himself has called Brazil’s president; the pressure is on Silva to perform. Assisted by his nephew, Hector Costa, also a federal policeman, Silva must battle the state police and a corrupt judiciary as well as criminals who prey on street kids, the warring factions of the Landless League, the big landowners and the Church itself, in order to solve the initial murder and several brutal killings that follow. Justice is hard to come by. An old priest, a secret liberation theologist, finally metes it out. Here is a Brazil that tourists never encounter.

Shoshana now you have me jazzed about Blood of the Wicked!
I few months ago I read Demon’s Kiss and Demon’s Hunger by Eve Silver ~ loved them.
I also just finished reading Annette Blair’s latest book in her new series ~ A Veiled Deception. It was wonderful! I can’t wait for the rest of this series. And today I received in the mail my order for her latest book in her Witch series ~ NEVER BEEN WITCHED. I LOVE this series.

Shoshana reply on January 27th, 2009 11:47 pm:
I think I have that book…for some reason, I haven’t been able to read any of my romances lately. I still buy them because they’re my first love, but I just haven’t been able to finish one of Eloisa James or Sherrilyn Kenyon or Lisa Kleypas, Julia Quinn and the likes. I love re-reading these books, but here I am on a romance reading funk.

I definitely love the Harry Potter Series and told everyone about it, even before it had the popularity it had towards the end of the Series.

I love reading books set in foreign countries, so Blood of the Wicked being set in Brazil would be a fascinating read for me. One of the most memorable books I’ve read is “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseini, this was set in Afghanistan and it helped me understand more about the plight of women in this country. I’ve also enjoyed “A Fine Balance” by Rohinton Mistry which was about families living in India. My employer recommended that I read this book and I’m so glad he did.

This book sounds like a great read. Would love to check it out.
Ann Rule True Crime Books are so well told. I have read almost every one of them because you just can’t put them down. Some of them are books full of a few different crimes and some are novels dedicated to just 1 case. They throw you into the lives of the victims all the way through to what happened to them. Usually they are heart wrenching and almost always the crimes make no sense as to why they had to happen.

wow, this books sounds intriguing!
Reading the synopsis, I definitely agree with you if this book will be filmed in a movie. Great trivia about being a lawyer first before becoming as a member of the police.
My favorite timeless reads will be those books written by Margaret Truman - murder crime suspense fiction. They always keep me on the edge of my seat.
I haven’t read The Red Tent and Poisonwood Bible. Is it true that the Kingsolver book is kinda dragging to read?
